We are developing cheap, scalable and efficient energy storage systems

We believe thermal energy storage will reduce the need for fossil-based energy and accelerate the energy transition.

OUR MISSION

In 2050, the largest portion of our CO2 emissions is anticipated to come from meeting the global heat demand. Given the current energy mixture, this is 44% of the total CO2 emissions in the energy sector.

The abundance of solar energy during peak summer days already causes the energy grid to overload. However, more heat energy is required in the winter months. This discrepancy between solar energy generation in the summer and high energy consumption in the winter results in sub-optimal renewable energy utilization. We believe efficient seasonal energy storage has the potential to solve this issue.

OUR SOLUTION

By capturing abundant renewable energy when it’s cheap in heated basalt rocks inside an isolated container, we’re able to efficiently store energy for an extended period of time. This enables stable heat output from renewable energy sources in both winter and summer. By dimensioning the system such that exactly one entire heating and cooling cycle can be completed in a single year, the system has a prolonged lifetime expectancy compared to other energy storage technologies. The theoretical efficiency increases for larger-scale systems, which makes our energy storage system even more viable for industrial processes (600°C). This is a huge step towards fossil fuel independence.
